Text Box: "The Bowery Bunch"   Thirty years ago, The Bowery Bunch was just an ordinary women's softball team. The first five years of it's existence proved just that. Then in 1981, the unexpected death of a teammate forever altered our teams course.    Our friend, Gloria Doody, was only 24 years old when she died in a car accident. It was April 13, 1981. She left behind a 5 year old son, Christopher. As most of us were blessed with young children of our own, the thought of this little boy growing up without his mommy was tearing at our hearts. We needed to do something to show him how much we loved his mom and how much we loved him.   We wanted to do something as a whole group and since we were a softball team - playing softball seemed to be our answer.    We held a women's softball tournament and raised over $1000 to go into a trust fund for Christopher.  We felt good about what we had done and it was time for our healing to begin.    The next year many people inquired about when the tournament was going to be. We hadn't thought about having another one. We began to organize and decided that we would raise money for a local children's charity, to honor the memory of our good friend, Gloria. That year we raised over $1500 for the Children's Hospital Intensive Care Unit. And while we weren't looking, the annual Gloria Doody Softball Tournament was born.    Now, 27 years later, and under a new name, Glory Be to Kids, continues to honor our friend and has raised over $250,000 for different children's charities throughout Western New York.    We are a small group - But with big hearts and the support of our community, we will continue to honor our friend and emphasize the importance our children are to our future.    Feel free to click on the years to learn more about the charities we've raised money for.
